New Care Award Honors Green Remodeling
This year, the Colorado Awards for Remodeling Excellence (CARE) awarded
the first ever Best Green Remodel to Classic Homeworks, a design/build firm
that works primarily on Denver’s older homes. Rick Pratt, the owner of the
19-year-old residential remodeling company, decided to add on to his own
1912 Wash Park Bungalow two years ago. After he married and his wife,
Deanna, with her two children from a previous marriage moved in, they needed
about double the space that they had. Rick, one of the founding members of
the Built Green Remodel Committee, was determined to align his sense of
environmental responsibility with the goals of the addition. Not only did he
meet this goal, but he also successfully designed the addition to fit both
the family’s needs and character of historic neighborhood, all while
preserving the beloved xeriscaped yard, garden, and deck.
The addition was built using many proven techniques and materials that
are environmentally-friendly, durable, and affordable. Through smart design
and quality craftsmanship, Rick and his family enjoy a home nearly double
the size of the original with utility costs only 30% higher.
The new addition blends effortlessly with the original bungalow through
matching architectural details such as bead board sheathing and stucco board
and batten finish with detail to match the original trim. The outcome is a
visually appealing home that meets the needs of the homeowners for years to
come, echoes the historic residential architecture, and minimizes the
environmental impact on our planet. |
