Background:
Built Green Colorado encourages home builders, suppliers and manufacturers to use technologies, products and practices to build homes that are better built and better for the environment. Colorado has the most successful green building program in the nation, with more than 35,000 registered homes through third quarter of 2007. The statewide, industry-driven program was introduced in 1995.

Specifications:
To achieve the Built Green Colorado distinction, homes must be designed and constructed tocomply with a rigorous checklist covering energy efficiency, materials, health, safety and resource conservation. A Built Green home is more energy-efficient, provides cleaner indoor air quality, conserves resources, is built with higher quality materials, requires less maintenance and will save the home buyer money.

In 2003, Built Green Colorado was voted the nation’s best green building program by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center.

Membership:

  • In 2006, over 3,241 new homes were registered in the Built Green Colorado program, representing approximately 25 percent of all new home permits in the metro Denver area and approximately 13 percent of the statewide market share.
  • Built Green Colorado has more than 200 builder members across the state and more than 50 industry sponsors.
  • Built Green Colorado is supported in part by the financial contributions of seven Built Green Industry Leaders including: James Hardie Siding Products; The Rheem Team; Boise Building Solutions (need to verify name preference); Kurowski Development Co. Trex; Whirlpool Corporation; Johns Manville; and Grace Construction Products.

Events and Reports:

  • Built Green Annual Awards - The Built Green Annual Awards recognize excellence and leadership among participating Built Green Colorado builders. These awards are announced yearly in October at the HBA Annual Meeting.
  • Built Green Annual Report – An annual report issued in the first quarter of each year detailing the recent progress and activity by the program in the Colorado new home market.
  • Built Green Excellence Awards - Recognizes participating Parade of Home builders statewide who incorporate Built Green Colorado standards into their parade homes.
  • Built Green Universities – Trainings conducted statewide to assist builders in understanding and complying with the requirements of the program, including the latest information on sound building science and helpful marketing information.
