Johns Manville: Committed to the Environment
For over 148 years Johns Manville has been a leading manufacturer of
premium-quality building products such as fiber glass insulation, commercial
roofing, and HVAC systems. We are dedicated to improving the lives of homeowners
by making their homes more comfortable, reducing their heating and cooling costs
and improving their homes’ indoor air quality. JM is proud of our 10 years
involvement with Built Green® Colorado as we share a common passion to promote
resource and energy efficient home construction throughout Colorado and North
America. Our passion for resource and energy efficiency is driven by our
desire to constantly innovate. In 2002, responding to growing concerns about the
potential health effects of exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), JM
became the first and only fiber glass manufacturer to eliminate formaldehyde
from its fiber glass building insulation. JM Formaldehyde-free™ fiber glass
building insulation delivers superior thermal performance that goes beyond
keeping homes cool in the summer, warm in the winter and lowering energy bills.
By reducing energy consumption, JM insulation is doing its part to reduce carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions. When homes are adequately insulated,
it takes less energy to heat and cool them, reducing the demand on power plants
so they burn less fuel and release fewer pollutants into the air. In addition
to being energy efficient our Formaldehyde-free insulation also improves the
indoor air quality of our homes and work environments. By building tighter, more
energy efficient homes, polluted air is likely to become trapped indoors and
breathed in by occupants, making it increasingly necessary to remove sources of
formaldehyde from the home. In addition, by removing formaldehyde, we’ve
eliminated binder-related emissions during our manufacturing process. As a
result, our fiber glass manufacturing plants are the only ones exempt from EPA
Hazardous Air Pollutant Regulations.
And
we support curbside recycling. JM uses 90,000 tons of recycled content each year
to make our insulation. Our manufacturing process incorporates 20 percent
post-consumer and five percent post-industrial recycled glass into our products
across North America. That’s more post-consumer recycled glass than other
leading fiber glass insulation manufacturers. By providing an outlet for
post-consumer waste, we help alleviate pressure on landfills and encourage
curbside glass recycling programs. What’s not made from recycled materials is
made from sand, an abundant and rapidly renewable resource.
In
recognition of these achievements the Home Safety Council’s recently awarded JM
with their Commendation Award for Product Innovation for Consumer Safety.
A recent example of JM innovation is our Spider™ Custom Insulation System.
Spider is the ideal insulation for new home construction and provides homeowners
with superior energy efficiency without sacrificing indoor air quality. Spider
is a spray-in formaldehyde-free fiber glass insulation that completely fills
wall cavities, eliminating all gaps and voids where energy can escape. In
addition to providing complete cavity coverage, Spider’s thermal performance is
superior to most other spray-in systems reaching R-values of R-15 in a 2X4 wall
cavity and R-23 in a 2x6 wall cavity. Because Spider is made from inorganic
fiber glass, it’s naturally resistant to mold growth and fire.
