EPA WaterSense

What greets you every morning when you brush your teeth and will soon bear the WaterSense label? High-efficiency bathroom sink faucets and faucet accessories! The EPA has announced the development of draft specifications these products must meet in order to receive the WaterSense label. The draft specifications will be finalized later this year, allowing manufacturers to certify and label their faucets and faucet accessories as WaterSense-qualifying. Builders and consumers will be able to find WaterSense labeled faucets and faucet accessories, such as aerators and laminar flow devices, at supply houses and on retail shelves starting in 2008!

Differentiate yourself in a tough market with Built Green®!

In this extremely tough market Built Green builders have an advantage – but only if they leverage their investment in better building practices by helping the buyer distinguish ‘better built and better for the environment’ from ‘building as usual’. The key is equip your sales people with the knowledge and tools to convince homebuyers that all homes are not equal in this regard.

Built Green is currently developing a training program that will help your sales people sell the added-value of the homes you build. The Built Green Sales program will include a half-day classroom session as well as a take-home manual for each salesperson. The training will leave your sales staff confident and prepared to sell your Built Green features, and ensure that you are getting the most value from your membership in the program!

The Built Green Sales Training and Manual is currently in first draft and is scheduled to be rolled out in September 2007. Stay tuned for further information.

The new open house?

Open houses and model homes will always be important sales tools, but increasingly the internet is taking a lead role in buyer decisions. Home buyers are now using the internet to do advance research before they ever step foot out of their houses and into your sales models. One critically important aspect of internet marketing is distinguishing your homes from the many others on the internet. To set your homes apart, and to take advantage of the heightened media and consumer attention to energy and the environment, Built Green builders can gain a crucial edge by providing information about Built Green on their websites. Being green and energy efficient is the new quality marker. Home buyers from all walks of life are interested in the savings, comfort and environmental improvements provided in a green, energy efficient home compared to a standard built-to-code home. Prominently display the Built Green logo in your home listings and on your website. Tell the buyer about the green and energy efficient features that add value to your homes. Build their confidence and trust in your company by informing them about third-party testing and verification and let them know that you share their concern for the community, the environment and future generations. When home buyers see the Built Green, Built Better logo, they will most certainly give your homes a closer look, and in this tough market Built Green builders should seize the opportunity to benefit from that advantage.

Code Resources

To help the home building industry and the energy codes community understand the requirements of the new 2006 International Energy Conservation Code® (IECC), the Building Energy Codes Program (BECP) offers many resources through its website, www.energycodes.gov, including software, webcasts, training, and articles.

A sampling of REScheck 2006 IECC ‘frequently asked questions’ are included in this issue of Setting the Standard.

Built Green Homes by the numbers

The total number of Built Green home registrations for 2007 to date is 1,395.

Builders: Remember that home registrations are due at time of permit. Submitting home registrations at the same time you submit permits will keep your paperwork on track. If you are permitting in volume you may register homes in bulk each month, but quarterly submittals are no longer allowed.

Soak up sales this month with July’s Sales Tip:

This month’s sales tip features item # 33 from the Built Green Checklist:

No recessed can lights installed in the building’s insulated ceiling/thermal envelope.

Sales Tip: The most popular form of residential lighting is also the most energy inefficient. Recessed fixtures can be some of the worst locations for heat loss, and can also be sources of moisture problems, and cold drafts.
