Change a Light, Change the World – Doug Seiter
 
Fact: The energy used in the average home can be responsible for more than twice the greenhouse gas emissions of the average car. (Source U.S. EPA)

In October 2006, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) kicked off the “Change a Light, Change the World” campaign to heighten public awareness of the significance of such a simple act as changing a light bulb. One bulb changed in every U.S. household would translate to a savings of 5.6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity (or $526 million a year)…

Parade of Homes Tickets On Sale
Tickets for the 2007 Denver Parade of Homes are now on sale. You won't want to miss this year's event which will be held at Southshore, a John Laing/Village Homes community in Aurora. The 2007 Denver Parade of Homes features five extraordinary homes inspired by Southshore's waterside location. The event opens to the public on July 28 and runs through September 3.

Half Price Tickets
Half price tickets are being sold to HBA members in blocks of 25. The deadline for purchasing half price tickets in July 27. Weekday tickets are $5 per ticket/$125 for a block of 25. Weekend tickets are $6 per ticket/$150 for a block of 25.

Industry Night Tickets
Industry Night will be held on Friday, July 20. Don't miss the Denver HBA's best party of the year. Purchase your tickets today! Tickets purchased June 4 - July 6 are $50. Tickets purchased July 7 - July 13 are $60.

The total number of home registrations for 2007 is 1385.

Builders: Remember that home registrations are due at time of permit. Submitting home registrations at the same time you submit permits will keep your paperwork on track. If you are permitting in volume you may register homes in bulk each month, but quarterly submittals are no longer allowed.

Western Governor’s Association Energy Efficient Buildings Workshop, July 17-18th in Denver:
 
All Built Green members are encouraged to take part in the Western Governor’s Association Energy Efficient Buildings Workshop to engage in discussions that can help shape policy, regulation and legislation going forward. The home building industry needs to proactively engage in this dialogue now.

This month’s sales tip features # 105 from the Built Green Checklist

At least a minimum portion of the hard-wired fixtures are supplied with ENERGY STAR – qualified self-ballasted compact fluorescent screw-based bulbs (CFLs).

Choose only one

  • 10% of all installed fixtures are supplied with bulbs that meet the requirement, 1pt; or
  • 20% of all installed fixtures are supplied with bulbs that meet that requirement, 3 pts Percentage to be based on fixture count; track lights should be counted based on the number of “heads”.

Sales Tip: ENERGY STAR Qualified Compact Fluorescent Bulbs:

  • Last up to 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs
  • Use 1/3 the energy of ordinary bulbs
  • Save an average of $30 each or more in energy costs over their lifetime
  • Provide the same amount of light (lumens) as standard incandescent bulbs, but use fewer watts of energy
  • Backed by a minimum 2-year manufacturer warranty
  • Prevent more than 450 pounds of greenhouse has emissions each over their life
