EnergyValue Housing Awards 2000
Congratulations to two builder members of Built Green® Colorado for winning entries in the 2000 Energy Value Housing
Awards Program. Over the past five years, the Energy Value Housing
Award (EVHA) has recognized builders who voluntarily incorporate energy
and resource efficiency into the design,
construction and marketing of their new homes. EVHA is sponsored
by the NAHB Research Center in partnership with Professional Builder
Magazine, Department of Energy and National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
TIERRA CONCRETE HOMES won a Gold Award in
the Moderate Climate Innovative Home category. Tierra Concrete
Homes uses an innovative approach to new home construction-- all of its
concrete homes are designed to take advantage of the sun's energy. This
2,800 square-foot home acts much like a storage device that holds
daytime solar heat for nighttime use. A raised-heel roof truss
allows a thick layer of insulation, that in combination with the
concrete walls, resists air infiltration. Other energy features
included radiant floor heat supplied by solar hot water panels and a
propane boiler; an innovative frost-protected shallow foundation that
minimizes heat loss to the ground and special glazing for windows facing
south. This home was built for about $68 per square foot, excluding
land.
Colorado Dream Homes, LLC won a Silver
Award in the Cold Climate Custom Home category. This home features
a double, 2x4-inch wall construction that accommodates R-38 fiber glass
batt insulation in the 12 inch wall cavity, resulting in deep window
wells that customers enjoy. Insulated concrete forms were used for
the foundation in addition to 100 percent recycled decking and an
air-sealing package that includes housewrap, spray foam and
caulking at all utility penetrations. This house was built for
about $80 per square foot, excluding land.
Again, congratulations to both these builders, who
have continue to display a high level of commitment to building homes
that are energy efficient and healthy for their customers. Through
this commitment, the EVHA winners are building for the future of green
home building.
