2002 Built Green Awards
At the Denver Metro HBA's Annual Membership meeting in October, these
stand-out Built Green members were recognized in front of several hundred of
their HBA-member colleagues at the Denver Hyatt Regency.
Built Green Award of Excellence
Relative newcomer Russel Burton's chair didn't see much use at the event,
since his presence was required at the podium to receive not only a Built Green Award of Excellence for Miller Burton's Parade home "Roaring
Fork", but also for a wide variety of judges awards for that same
energy-efficient, environmentally sensitive residence. The runaway success
of the Miller Burton home demonstrates that high performance/low-impact home
construction can accompany exceptional aesthetic appeal, and that even
first-time Built Green builders can excel when committed professionals like
Russel Burton and project manager M.A. Lorio - both of whom were inducted
into the "Built Green Hall of Fame" as a result of their efforts -
are on hand to ensure that green designs are effectively realized on site.
One of the most talked-about exhibits at this year's Parade of Homes was
also a part of Miller Burton's environmental ensemble - a residential scale
fuel cell supplied by Plug Power Inc. that provided, in one of the country's
first demonstrations of this kind, electricity to "Roaring Fork"
during the event and is now generating zero-emission electrons for the
Denver Fire Department.
Built Green Builder of the Year
It was perhaps no great surprise to anyone present that Engle Homes
claimed the coveted "Builder of the Year" award, having firmly
established themselves as one of the premier production builders of
energy-efficient homes in the Denver metro area. Engle's homes demonstrate
the company's enthusiastic commitment to the very leading edge of building
"systems" science in pursuing high-performance, comfortable homes
that speak to the homebuyer's demand for low operating costs and safe,
durable living spaces. CEO Erik Eckberg accepted the award, and gave no
indication that Engle would let success slacken its vigilance in seeking new
ways to build better, greener homes.
Built Green Home of the Year under $500,000
In the under $500,000 category, The James Company distinguished itself
both for building an outstanding Built Green home and for advancing the
cause of sustainable construction practices throughout Colorado. The James
Company is a genuine pioneer in the arena of sustainable materials usage and
construction debris recycling, having created a nationally recognized
recycling program and counting over 300 tons of diverted landfill waste to
its credit. Donna Merton, James' environmental director/residential designer
and a member of the Board of Directors for the Colorado Association for
Recycling, accepted the award for a company whose efforts toward changing
the way Colorado builds homes truly reflects their mission to "go the
extra mile."
Built Green Home of the Year over $500,000
Eric Adams is a custom builder from Monument who was drawn to
Built Green a few months ago as "a way to build a better home."
And how - Eric's first effort as a Built Green builder netted him 206 points
on a checklist that requires 70, and an energy performance score of 88,
which represents an impressive 40% improvement over code. Eric sees value in
the Built Green brand in the way that it compels questions from homebuyers,
and allows Adams the opportunity to explain how the environmentally
beneficial aspects of a Built Green home translate to a higher-quality home
package overall. Winning the award for best Built Green home over
$500,000 is only the beginning, says Adams, "I can do better."
Built Green Sponsor of the Year
The Built Green program would not be enjoying the success it is now - it
wouldn't be the nation's largest program with almost 13,000 homes registered
across the state - without the leadership and support of its sponsors. The
"top rung" of the program's sponsorship structure is occupied by
the Industry Leaders, and this year the leader among Leaders was Boise
Building Solutions. Since joining the program, Boise has taken the Built Green mission to heart, both at the level of corporate culture and in the
specific actions of dedicated individuals. No fewer than three different
Boise representatives received awards for their contribution to the Built Green mission. Dave Bear joined the Hall of Fame for his energetic
leadership of both the Energy and Environmental Affairs Committee, which
oversees the program, and the Checklist Task Force, which shapes the
technical document around which most of the program's work revolves. Ron
Gurss was singled out as the program's champion in the field; his ability to
convince both builders and sponsors of the value of program membership has
increased both the market share and the technical expertise of the program.
Finally, Tom Hoffman accepted the Sponsor of the Year award for spearheading
a partnership that has benefited Boise, Built Green, and homeowners across
the state.
